It’s not how good you are, it’s how good you want to be.

What does having a growth mindset mean to you?

I have a short article to wrap up the month of July on how you can cultivate a growth mindset and enhance your career, business and life.

A “growth mindset,” as Carol Dweck calls it, is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a tendency to believe that you can grow. In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she explains that while a “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are static givens which we can’t change in any meaningful way, a growth mindset thrives on challenge and sees failure “not as evidence of unintelligence but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.”

Now, have you ever thought to yourself: “I already know this” and then you distract yourself or maybe checkout? The thing is if you believe that you “already know it” then your brain shuts off and doesn’t seek more growth or learning. We’ve all been there from time to time but remember that there’s always room for more growth and learning. Here are 10 tips to help you cultivate a growth mindset:

1. Acknowledge and embrace imperfections – not dealing with your weaknesses will inhibit you from overcoming them and reaching success.

2. View challenges as opportunities - Having a growth mindset means you will appreciate having opportunities for self-improvement.

3. Try different learning tactics - What works for one person may not work for you

4. Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning.” - When you make a mistake or fall short of a goal, you haven’t failed; you’ve learned.

5. Stop seeking approval - When you prioritise approval over learning, you sacrifice your own potential for growth.

6. Value the process over the end result - Enjoy the learning process

7. Emphasise growth over speed - Learning fast isn’t the same as learning well and learning well sometimes requires allowing time for mistakes.

8. Always ask “how can I better learn and implement this?”

9. Look for different perspectives or lessons you can take away (this requires critical thinking and looking past the surface).

10. See if it is fear where your ego or mind is trying to keep you safe by not wanting to learn something?

One of my clients who joined my coaching program over a 6 month period said she went to all the live events and worked through all the modules multiple times yet was able to keep gaining more insights and learnings each time. She put this down to her seeking the lessons and different perspectives every time. This is your sign to always be looking for opportunities to grow, take a deeper dive into something and not to close it off because you have heard it before. That is where the real magic happens, and real change and enhancements (next version of you) become your reality.

What’s one area you are seeking growth in currently? Finally, if you'd like support with growth in your career or business, you're welcome to shoot me an email or book a call.

I wish you a beautiful day and the courage to lead your best life.
