Creator Mode on LinkedIn: Benefits & Cons

Before you switch to Creator Mode on LinkedIn, you have to ask if this setting makes sense for your personal brand or business? It comes back to what your reasons are for being on the platform.

If your goal is to grow an audience and highlight your expertise and content to establish your services and personal brand, then Creator Mode is a good setting for you. As a creator, you have the power to inspire and influence. To me, being a creator goes beyond creating content, it is about creating with purpose and connecting with your community. It is also about evolving with the digital landscape.

What do you get in Creator mode?

  • A “Follow” button instead of a “Connect” button on your profile allowing people to follow your content without sending you a connection request.

  • Your profile has the "Feature" section placed higher at the top (before the “About” section) which features any posts you select to encourage people to follow your content.

  • The "Activity" section in your profile features your posts instead of your engagement activity

  • You can add five hashtags to your profile headline that reflect your topics of interest, expertise or focus.

  • You can see analytics on your posts.

  • You can film a short video as your profile picture which automatically plays when someone lands on your profile. Note however this feature looks like it is being phased out by the end of June 2023.

Other Tools for Creator Mode:

As the name suggests, it is all about creating content to help you build your audience so under Creator Tools you will find access to LinkedIn Live, Audio Event, Newsletters to engage your audience. These features are a great way to grow awareness of your brand and exposure to a new audience, especially if you collaborate with others. Before Creator Mode, you would have had to apply to get access to these tools, now they are available when you switch on this Creator setting.

Reasons to consider for not being in Creator Mode:

  • If you don’t create enough content or don’t post consistently.

  • It may not be the right timing to switch it on because you are still developing your brand messaging and getting clear on your pillar content topics.

  • Your goal is to grow your professional network by being intentional with whom you want to connect and not have “Follow” as the main option.

  • You are giving up prime real estate of your optimised “About” section in your profile appearing first in your profile.

In Summary:

Creator Mode is a powerful feature you can access that can help you to grow your audience and take your personal brand to the next level.
